Fish Aquarium Updates

Since getting Addison her fish aquarium its been quite a lot of fun for the kids. Both kids love the fish and check in on them daily. Braden turns their light on every morning and then off at night. We have had a rocky start getting our fish tank healthy. Right away in February we found Kiki (orange platy) dead and floating. That prompted a conversation on life and death which left Braden confused when other family members passed away. Let’s hope in time we can sort it all out so he doesn’t think we put dead things in the toilet!

Almost two weeks after having our fish, I woke up to find a tiny movement in the plastic plant. Looking closely, I realized it was a baby fish. Later that day I found another baby, even smaller. They were being circled by the bigger fish so I removed them and put them in a fish bowl. The kids and I took a trip to the aquarium store and got a tiny tank that floats in the big tank but protects the babies. They were very excited to go to the pet store and we spent quite a long time there looking at all the fish, the mice, rats, birds, rabbits, lizards, frogs, snakes and turtles. But then one of our fish died and I realized all the fish were looking a bit sick with something called “ick.” So we were back to the “fish store” to get medicine.

In March one of the babies, the tiny one also died but the rest of the fish got better and have been fine since. The surviving baby has grown quite large and is changing color but I still can’t figure out what kind it is so I won’t know yet who the mother was! Braden and Addison both named them and I put their names on the fish tank, they are so proud of them.

Fish Update as of June 2009:

By April the last baby died and not long after we had two more deaths, Polka (lyretail mollie) and Truck (plecostomus/sucker fish). The remaining troopers which are still going strong are Peter (balloon body mollie) who is quite a bully, Spot (white platy) and my favorite Kooka Bear (purple blue female betta).
